En septembre dernier, j’ai été plongé dans une lecture totalement fascinante… le titre du livre; “Natural Born Heroes” de Christopher McDougal. Un livre captivant dans lequel l’auteur nous plonge sur l’île de Crète, en Grèce, pendant la Deuxième guerre Mondiale. Ce livre au style particulier; une histoire vraie racontée comme un roman d’aventure, s’entrecoupe de passages tantôt scientifiques, tantôt anecdotiques, tantôt philosophiques. À travers un périple rocambolesque, Christopher McDougall cherche à répondre à une seule question: “Comment développer une santé véritable?” Tout y passe: les origines de la mythologie Grec, la diète méditerranéenne, l’incroyable endurance physique des Crétois, les origines de l’éducation physique, les principes héroïques de Georges Hébert et la méthode d’entraînement du Dr Phil Maffetone.
Pourquoi ce sujet m’interpelle? C’est que depuis quelque temps, je me passionne sur l’art de mieux bouger et les mouvements dit « fonctionnels ». Natural Born Heroes nous transporte dans l’art de bouger naturellement. Ainsi, « lever des poids assis à la salle d’entraînement est-il vraiment un mouvement naturel? » Si l’objectif est d’avoir de plus gros bras, oui! Cet objectif aura probablement été atteint en un mois ou deux. Cependant, avoir de plus gros bras n’est aucunement utile dans la vie de tous les jours. Pour retrouver une meilleure santé, nous devons retourner à nos instincts naturels et être capable de réaliser efficacement des mouvements généraux. Nous devrions toujours nous entraîner de manière à solliciter plusieurs groupes musculaires à la fois lors d’un seul et même exercice. Cette image du corps athlétique où les gens possèdent à la fois endurance, flexibilité, force et agilité a quelque peu été détournée au début des années 1970 lorsqu’un certain Arnold Schwarzenegger est apparu sur les écrans radars. Sous sa montagne de muscles « boostés » aux stéroïdes, notre cher monsieur Univers a complètement révolutionné notre représentation de la beauté et de la santé. Depuis, l’image d’une santé idéale signifie gros muscles et « shake » de protéines.
Est-ce vraiment l’idéal à atteindre? La santé ne devrait pas être une question de sensation ou encore d’image. La santé est une question de fonction et d’être au meilleur de soi, à chaque instant. Si Arnold avait eu à s’enfuir d’un ours en plein cœur de la forêt, sa montagne de muscles ne lui aurait pas été d’une grande utilité. Même chose pour sauver un individu de la noyade. Au lieu de se concentrer sur une activité, nous devrions plutôt favoriser le développement d’un large éventail d’habiletés motrices. Nous devrions, dès le jeune âge, apprendre à courir, sauter, grimper, nager et lancer. Pourquoi? Parce que notre développement moteur est intimement lié avec notre développement neurologique. Sans cerveau, il est impossible de se mouvoir dans notre environnement. Notre système nerveux est essentiel à notre survie. Il y a plusieurs millions d’années, notre système nerveux nous permettait de nous protéger afin de fuir le danger ou de combattre un ennemi. Il nous donnait également l’opportunité de prospérer pour se déplacer à la recherche d’un environnement plus enrichissant ou pour chercher de la nourriture. Le mouvement est si important pour le développement du cerveau qu’il est possible d’affirmer « qu’un cerveau et un système nerveux est seulement nécessaire chez les créatures qui bougent »(1). D’un point de vue évolutif, le développement de la taille du cerveau de l’espèce humaine est en relation direct avec le développement d’une multitude d’habiletés motrices. D’un être qui se déplaçait à quatre pattes, l’espèce humaine s’est relevée sur ses deux jambes, lui permettant de regarder au loin pour envisager le futur et libérer les deux bras pour manipuler des objets. Cette évolution est également visible dans la vie de tous les jours. Observez un bébé grandir et vous constaterez que le développement de son cerveau est directement corrélé aux différents mouvements naturels qu’il apprend au fur et à mesure que la vie progresse.
Ainsi, pour maintenir une santé véritable, bouger est essentiel. Plus l’activité sollicite un large éventail de muscles, plus grand sera l’impact sur notre santé. De plus, le développement moteur et le développement neurologique vont de pair. J’aime bien l’adage qui dit « qu’améliorer son cerveau, c’est améliorer sa santé » et vous comprenez maintenant pourquoi. Pour conclure, je vous laisse avec cette réflexion; on dit du cerveau humain qu’il permet la conscience, qu’il permet de penser et de réfléchir, mais en bout de ligne, qu’est-ce que la pensée? Est-ce seulement l’internalisation du mouvement?
